Film Score Friday: Beetlejuice

It wouldn’t be October without a Tim Burton/Danny Elfman collaboration!

Director: Tim Burton
Music: Danny Elfman

When I first saw this movie at the tender age of 8, I had no idea what to think of it! It took a few more viewings to actually have it grow on me.

After Tim Burton directed “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”, his next movie was “Beetlejuice”. He definitely has an ability to make low-budget hits! I also love that he has certain actors that he works with. His 16 (SIXTEEN!?) collaborations with Danny Elfman are some of the best out there.

In “Beetlejuice”, the score is zany and dark…much like the character Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton)! Elfman assigned different themes for different characters. What I like most about “Travel Music” is that quirky darkness that keeps everything from feeling too sentimental as Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis) die in a car accident while out running errands.
